Why Prince William was ‘concerned’ over Meghan Markle’s wedding outfit.

It’s hard to believe that Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for more than a decade. Their royal wedding in 2011 was a grand affair, capturing the hearts of millions. Just a few years later, William witnessed his brother, Prince Harry, marry Meghan Markle, marking another significant moment in the royal family’s history. However, the dynamics between the brothers have shifted dramatically over the years, particularly with Harry and Meghan’s marriage leading to increased tensions.

Recent revelations suggest that William’s feelings during Harry’s wedding were not solely celebratory. It has been reported that he harbored concerns regarding Meghan’s wedding attire and how it might reflect on their late mother, Princess Diana. This context underscores the complexities of royal relationships.

William and Kate’s relationship began at university, and they solidified their bond with their wedding at Westminster Abbey. At that time, neither William, Kate, nor Harry could foresee the challenges that would arise in the coming years, particularly with Harry meeting Meghan on a blind date in 2016. Their romance quickly blossomed, leading to an engagement that would captivate the public.

However, tensions simmered beneath the surface. The relationship between Meghan and Kate has often been characterized as strained, and there have been reports of friction between William and Meghan as well. Initially, William and Meghan seemed to hit it off, with William expressing happiness for Harry’s newfound love. Yet, as the relationship progressed, William’s concerns became more pronounced.

In their book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand detail William’s protective instincts toward Harry. Before Meghan and William’s first meeting, Meghan was acutely aware of the royal scrutiny and perceived it as a “grilling.” To her relief, William opened their conversation with warmth, noting how pleased he was to see Harry so happy. Despite this, William privately expressed worries about the speed of Harry’s relationship with Meghan. He urged Harry to take his time, which led to tension; Harry felt William’s approach was dismissive.

As Meghan navigated royal life, she faced unique challenges. Lacking familiarity with royal customs, she often felt isolated and overwhelmed. In a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan explained that she struggled to understand the role she was stepping into, highlighting the lack of guidance she received from the family. This situation bred frustration, particularly for Harry, who felt that William and Kate hadn’t provided the necessary support for Meghan’s transition.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl noted that Harry believed William and Kate could have made more effort to welcome Meghan. This perceived lack of support contributed to a rift between the brothers. A friend of Harry’s recounted that this sentiment was vocalized during a disagreement, indicating a fracture in their once-close relationship.

Despite these tensions, Harry and Meghan’s love flourished. They announced their engagement in November 2017 and wed in a lavish ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor in 2018. Leading up to the wedding, Meghan faced significant stress, particularly surrounding her father, Thomas Markle, who controversially staged paparazzi photos. His subsequent absence from the wedding due to health issues further complicated the situation.

In retrospect, the contrasting dynamics between William, Harry, and their respective partners reflect the complexities of modern royal life. As both couples navigate their roles and relationships, the ongoing saga continues to captivate the public’s interest, revealing the challenges faced by a family in the global spotlight.
