Sarah Palin became a household name in 2008 when she was chosen as John McCain’s running mate in his presidential campaign. The former Alaska governor was described as a “force of nature” in Republican politics, but her personal life has attracted attention in recent years, especially after her 2020 divorce from her husband of over 30 years, Todd Palin.
Born in Sandpoint, Idaho, Palin moved to Alaska as a baby. Growing up in Wasilla, she excelled in basketball and became a natural leader. It was at a high school basketball game that she met her future husband, Todd. In 1988, the couple eloped, marrying at a local courthouse with witnesses they found across the street.
Together, they had five children: Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, and Trig, who was born with Down syndrome. Todd supported Sarah throughout her political career, including during her historic term as Alaska’s first female governor in 2006. Known as the “First Dude” while Sarah was in office, Todd was not one to bask in the spotlight, staying more focused on his work in oil production and his passion for snowmobile racing.
Their marriage appeared strong to outsiders, even as they faced public scrutiny during Sarah’s political rise. However, behind closed doors, the relationship was strained. Just days after their 31st wedding anniversary, Todd filed for divorce, citing “incompatibility of temperament.” Sarah was blindsided by the news, receiving an email from a lawyer about the split. The divorce was finalized in March 2020, and Sarah described the experience as deeply painful, comparing it to being shot.
During the difficult time, Sarah leaned on her children for support, and although she tried to save the marriage through counseling, it eventually ended. Todd has since moved on and is now in a relationship with a woman who lives in New York City.
Sarah, too, has found love again. In 2022, she confirmed her relationship with former New York Rangers star Ron Duguay. The couple had been longtime friends before romance blossomed. Sarah describes her relationship with Duguay as “safe and comfortable,” appreciating that he provides emotional support during challenging times. Duguay has also been active in supporting Sarah’s political endeavors, including her recent bid for Alaska’s at-large congressional seat.
Though Sarah’s political career continues, her personal life has clearly seen dramatic shifts. Her journey from the national spotlight during the 2008 election to dealing with a public divorce has been challenging, but she remains resilient, finding new love and continuing to pursue her political passions.
