In a heartfelt Instagram comment, Solange Knowles recently shared her personal journey with health issues, revealing that in 2018, she was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Sjögren’s syndrome, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). This came in response to musician Shaun Ross’s post about his own experience with POTS after long COVID.
POTS primarily affects the body’s ability to regulate blood flow when standing, causing symptoms like dizziness and fainting. Sjögren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder, leads the immune system to attack moisture-producing glands, resulting in dry eyes and mouth. MCAS is a condition causing recurrent allergy-like symptoms, such as hives, swelling, low blood pressure, and breathing difficulties.
Reflecting on these conditions, Solange expressed solidarity with others facing similar struggles, stating, “Sending so much love and strength… to all in the comments struggling with the debilitating, confusing, and lonely symptoms of POTS!” She also credited Dysautonomia International, a non-profit organization focused on autonomic nervous system disorders, as an invaluable resource. She highlighted her gratitude for the “spoonie community,” a term often used by those with chronic illnesses, for offering support through uncertain times.
Solange’s health challenges have impacted her career, having previously led to the cancellation of performances, including a major 2017 show at Florida State University’s Homecoming. Her management announced that she was “prohibited from live performances until further notice” due to a medical condition, leading many fans to wonder about her well-being.
In her recent post, Solange addressed why she had been private about her diagnoses until now, sharing that she deeply resonates with the desire not to let health conditions define her identity. She explained how her commitment to “owning” her body and controlling its portrayal is rooted in her upbringing, crediting her mother, Tina Knowles, for teaching her resilience.
Solange’s resolve to navigate her health journey on her own terms reflects her strength and commitment to maintaining agency over her life and public image. By sharing her story now, she provides both visibility and support to those navigating similar health challenges in silence.
