My Ex-husband Got Our House, Car and All Our Money After Divorce – I Laughed Because That Was Exactly What I Planned
After years in a marriage marked by Mike’s obsession with wealth, I agreed to give him everything in our divorce. But as he reveled in his “victory,” he had no clue that a secret plan was in motion.
Leaving the lawyer’s office, I wore a blank expression. Rain poured down, matching the defeated look I wanted people to see. Inside, though, I was buzzing with anticipation. As the elevator doors closed behind me, I couldn’t contain a giggle. By the time I reached the lobby, I was laughing outright, knowing Mike was about to fall into the trap he had set for himself.
A few weeks earlier, Mike had become impossible. He didn’t care about saving our marriage; he only wanted to “win” — the house, the car, our savings, as if they were trophies. I was tired of his obsession with material things, so I made up my mind to give him everything he wanted, but with a twist.
When he finally demanded a divorce, I didn’t fight. My easy agreement threw him off, and I saw the smug little grin on his face. He couldn’t believe I wasn’t begging him to reconsider. “Fine,” I said simply, letting him think he’d won it all.
In the sterile conference room, I sat across from him as he listed the assets he wanted. I barely listened, just nodded and agreed. He puffed up with pride, completely unaware of the surprise waiting for him.
After leaving the lawyer’s office, I texted my mom: “I’m heading to the house to pack up my things. I’ll call you when it’s time.” She replied with a thumbs-up, excited to set the plan in motion.
I packed my belongings that evening, which wasn’t much; the house had always felt like his, anyway. By the time I was done, I felt a strange sense of relief. This chapter was closing, and I had one final call to make.
“Hey, Mom, it’s time,” I said. My mother, Barbara, had seen through Mike’s flashy facade from the start. She’d helped us buy this house, and there was a little clause he’d forgotten about in his excitement to secure the place: Mom had rights to stay whenever she wanted, for as long as she wanted.
The next morning, my phone rang. “You set me up!” Mike’s voice was furious. I couldn’t help but smile.
“Set you up?” I asked, as if I didn’t know exactly what he meant.
“Your mother’s in the house! She’s taken over!” he spluttered. I bit into my toast. “Remember the down payment she helped us with?” I asked. “There was an agreement: she can live there whenever she wants.”
I heard silence as it dawned on him. Finally, he sputtered, “This isn’t over!” I could hear Mom in the background, loud and clear.
“Michael, get your feet off the coffee table!” she said, bossing him around like he was an unruly child. “And where’s the good coffee? You didn’t stock anything decent!” There were more muffled grumbles, followed by a loud crash, and then the line went dead.
I smiled and leaned back. Freedom had never tasted so sweet.
