Gregory held up the envelope, baffled. “Look at this, Cynthia. There were keys inside, and our old car is gone! Now there’s a brand-new car outside. Who could’ve done this?”
Cynthia peered at the car. “And there’s no note?”
Gregory shook his head. Just then, a car honked, and his old car pulled up. A young man stepped out, and Gregory’s face lit up. “Jack! You kept your promise!”
Cynthia smiled knowingly, having been Jack’s “partner in crime” for this surprise.
Jack hugged Gregory. “After what you did for me, I had to! Mrs. Smith helped with the plan.”
Gregory looked at his wife, chuckling. “So, I was the only one clueless here?”
Cynthia laughed. “We couldn’t let you suspect a thing! Now, Jack, come in and join us for breakfast.”
As they ate, Jack shared how he’d first met Gregory. “Three weeks ago, we met at the airport. I was rushing to see my wife in labor but had mistakenly booked my flight for the next day. Gregory overheard and insisted on giving me his ticket so I could make it in time. I couldn’t believe his kindness, especially when he said, ‘Today, we switch tickets; one day, we’ll switch cars!’”
Jack added, “Because of Gregory, I was there to see my baby’s birth. So, I had to keep my promise.” He gestured at the car outside. “Please, let me do this for you both.”
Reluctant but moved, Gregory and Cynthia accepted. Jack even went further, helping them with house repairs they’d been struggling to afford.
Since then, Jack, his wife, and baby daughter have become like family to Gregory and Cynthia, visiting often, with Jack always ensuring the couple never felt alone.
