Korben White, a 16-year-old from Norfolk, made a statement at his prom by wearing a striking red gown paired with a sequined tuxedo top, inspired by American actor Billy Porter. His mother, Nina Green, shared Korben’s look on social media, proudly supporting his choice to express his feminine side while attending Archbishop Sancroft High School’s prom. Her tweet, which celebrated Korben’s individuality, went viral, drawing praise from many and criticism from others.
Green recalled Korben’s excitement, saying, “As soon as he got out of the car, everyone just cheered. I was crying; some teachers were crying.” Support also came from RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage, who commended Green for championing her son’s identity, calling Korben a “star.”
Korben, who performs in drag as Miss Frou Frou, said the response from Visage was “surreal,” calling her “an icon.” His mother, who never anticipated the overwhelming reaction, shared that she simply wanted to show her son living authentically.
Parents of other gender-nonconforming children shared their stories, highlighting the ongoing challenges of acceptance. Korben’s story encouraged many, serving as a reminder of the importance of supporting young people’s self-expression.
