A tragic explosion in Newcastle’s Benwell and Elswick area claimed the life of seven-year-old Archie York and a man believed to be in his 30s. The explosion, which occurred early on October 16, also injured six others, including a child. All but one—a man in critical but stable condition—have been discharged from the hospital. Northumbria Police expressed condolences, urging privacy for the victims’ families.
At the scene, Superintendent Darren Adams shared, “It is with great sadness that I stand in front of you today following the tragic death of a young child… This is a truly devastating outcome.” The police and community offered heartfelt support to Archie’s family and friends, with neighbors describing him as a “lovely lad” known and loved by everyone.
Social media tributes from Archie’s family, including his aunt, called him “the most beautiful, funny, and caring little boy,” and shared that “his name deserves to be shouted from the rooftops.”
Drone footage of the incident shows one home almost entirely destroyed, with others severely damaged. Several residents have been evacuated due to the blast’s impact.
