Pope Francis, 88, has canceled his Sunday prayer appearance as he remains in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for treatment of a respiratory tract infection. Admitted on Friday after suffering from bronchitis for over a week, the Pope’s medical team decided he needed rest to aid his recovery. His treatment was slightly adjusted on Saturday, with laboratory tests showing some improvement.
While there is no set release date, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni stated they would assess how he responds to treatment. Despite his health struggles, Francis did not show a fever and spent time in prayer and reading.
The Pope has faced various health issues, including lung infections from prior surgery. This marks his fourth stay at the hospital, where he has previously received treatment. Despite recent health problems, he had been managing a busy schedule since the New Year.
