Kathy Bates’ Toughest Role Yet: Surviving Cancer and Advocating for Lymphedema Awareness
Kathy Bates, the award-winning actress known for unforgettable roles in Misery, About Schmidt, and American Horror Story, has faced battles far tougher than anything on screen. At 75, Bates is not only a two-time cancer survivor but also lives with lymphedema, a chronic condition caused by lymph node removal during cancer treatment.
After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 and breast cancer in 2012, Bates underwent a double mastectomy. But it was the onset of lymphedema that truly challenged her. “I went berserk,” she recalled, describing the shock and frustration she felt upon learning her condition was incurable.
Despite depression and fears her career was over, Bates found strength through expert care and by helping others. As the national spokesperson for the Lymphatic Education & Research Network, she raises awareness about the disease that affects over 10 million Americans—more than ALS, MS, and Parkinson’s combined.
With compression sleeves and determination, Bates continues acting and inspiring others. “I feel blessed,” she says, “because if I didn’t have this, I wouldn’t be able to help.”
Her story is a powerful reminder that even in pain, purpose can shine through—and Kathy Bates is a shining light for many.
